Deeper Imagination

May 4, 2020 – Day 49 of my quarantine.

I thought it might be interesting to risk a little vulnerability today and take you on a metaphorical journey into the inner workings of my creative process – the place from which all my conceptual ideas and projects come from. Each thing I create has its own journey from idea into form, so today I’ll tell you how those journeys begin –

(My Archetype. Builder of Dreams & Notions who is both the architect and object, designer and design, creation and creator within my imagination.)

There is an outpost where I linger before departing on any journey into my deeper imagination. It stands at the entrance of a mysterious, overgrown wood. The forest is dark and deep. There is no path. I always feel a little uncertain at this juncture.

As I pause here I recall the words of my mentor –

“You enter the forest
at the darkest point,
where there is no path.

Where there is a way or path,
it is someone else’s path.

You are not on your own path.

If you follow someone else’s way,
you are not going to realize
your potential.”

I watch as small patches of light play across the forest floor in abstract patterns. I hear the murmur of the wind through the treetops and the gentle lilt of songbirds. I smell the pine and evergreen, relishing the sweet, rich perfume of decaying bark and leaves on the ground. I feel the aliveness of the forest and let it enter into me fully. I resist nothing and accept everything.

There is a deep and complete understanding that only I can enter these woods. I know that I must go alone. And carry back what I discover as best I can to show to others. Peering farther into the faint shadows and dim flickering light among the trees I think I see a child at play … and I know that child is me – an echo of me from the time of my imagination’s first awakening.

It is here, before embarking,  that all potential and possibilities exist simultaneously for me. Everything and nothing in a swirling, phantasmagorical compendium of images and sensations.

This is my Beginners Mind.

Until next time …
